A HOME FIT FOR A CRUSADING JESUIT

Another place that must not be missed is the picturesque seaside town of Anchieta.  It was founded on, or near, an Indian settlement by the Jesuit, Padre José De Anchieta, a Spaniard who was born in the Canary Islands. Anchieta evangelised towards the indigenous peoples, and helped them protect their rights against the often brutal Portuguese.  Anchieta was also the founder of São Paulo.  The Santuário Nacional Padre Anchieta was completed in 1569 with Indian labour & later with slaves. Anchieta lived, worked & died here, as well as travelling all over Brasil. His body is interred in the Anchieta Palace in the State Capital of Espirito Santo - Vitoria. He is often described as being “the first Apostle of Brasil”.  Find out more about him here.
