ESPIRITO SANTO

I travelled by bus from Sorocaba in São Paulo State in the South East of the country to the seaside resort of Guarapari in the most northerly of the South Eastern States, Espírito Santo.  This epic voyage took me, my wife and my sister in law, a bum numbing 15 hours.  We travelled with Transgerci Turismo, a local tour company from Sorocaba.  This trip would take us through 4 States - São Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Minas Gerais and finally Espirito Santo.

For the purposes of this guide though I will concentrate on the State of Espírito Santo and some of the things you must not fail to see whilst there.

Espírito Santo was one of the first places settled by the Portuguese when they arrived in Brasil.  The name for the inhabitants of the State is Capixabas’.  This is an old word from the Tupi-Guarani language which means “Corn Hair” and many have thought that this is the way the Indians first saw the Europeans when they landed.

I will use these pages to tell you about some of the places that you can visit in Espirito Santo, such as Anchietta, the fantastic seaside resort city of Guarapari (surely one of Brasil’s best kept secrets), Vila Velha (the original capital) and Vitória (the current one)

A more extensive overview of the State in general can be read by following the link below.
